Friday I took advantage of my employers summer hours allowing for an early dismissal at 2:00. So I "officially" fished from 2:00-5:00 on a river that eluded me for some time. I've been looking for a warm water stream relatively close to home and the Cannon River fits the bill. My last couple attempts fell through(weather, water conditions etc) but Friday things worked out.
The river was off color but didn't seem high and USGS had flow in median range so I took it as "normal." It was 85 degrees and felt hotter. Reports indicated a good number of smallies, some pike but I was surprised how many carp I saw. I guess I need to tie up some carp patterns. I took my saltwater flies still fresh from fishing the surf over the Fourth. Mainly deceivers, clousers along with an assortment of bunny leaches and woolly buggers. A brown estaz bugger took the most fish. There was an epic caddis hatch and I swear I saw fish rise to them.
